Old Yamaga - Soumon Area

The southern area around Buzen St in the Soumon area is what remains of old Yamaga.
During the Edo Era, Buzen St opened up to the Kikuchi River where boats would deliver rice from nearby towns of Kikuchi, Shichijou and other nearby towns.

The rice made from this area is famous for its good quality and taste.
The boat landing area used to have a wooden Gate (Soumon) that marked the South Gate and the entrance to Yamaga town.

The original Gate no longer exists as Buzen St no longer continues to the riverbank. There is still a smaller replica Gate present near the original site of the Soumon. As the Soumon area was close to the riverbank, factories and shops thrived that use rice as a primary ingredient for making sake, miso and rice crackers.

Some of these shops still exist today in their original form with the older structures dating back to over 250 years old. Visitors may take a tour of these shops and factories if they wish and try the local sake, miso and may also participate in the making of rice crackers. .
